Helping to Conserve Natural Resources Starts at Home

Posted by admin under Uncategorized

Conserving our precious natural resources is a task that begins at home. Each individual can perform tasks to clean, preserve and save the environment. There are various ways people can get together and made a difference.

Start a Recycling Program

It is not hard to find others in the same community with the desire to start a recycling program. Utilize social media, signs in the neighborhood or an ad in the local paper to start. Contact city council persons or aldermen to learn the best way to begin a program. It is important to follow through on all the advice and procedures given. Different organizations have websites to help you get started and provide helpful advice.

Once the program has begun, encourage each homeowner to participate by holding workshops about recycling. Discuss the importance of separating recyclables into different containers. Also discuss special items such as motor oil, CFL’s, electronics, paints and other chemicals. These require special disposal techniques. Locate and advertise sites for these items.

Live a Green Lifestyle

The misconception that living a green lifestyle means having no electricity or running water is bogus. It does mean to be aware of everything in your home and environment. For example:

If the local power company offers a program to allow you to receive part or all of your power from green sources such as solar or wind, sign up for it. Your power will not be produced by polluting fossil fuels. You can search for green energy providers at comparison sites like texaselectricityproviders.com.
Install a solar system to provide part or all of the power your home needs. Some utility companies will buy excess power from customers.
Install a solar hot water system for your home. Use a heat recovery system to use the hot water to help heat the home in the winter. This reduces the need for additional power.
Choose carpeting, paint, building materials, linens and furniture made from sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. They have less impact on the environment and in addition, are healthier.
Compost kitchen refuse and yard waste. Use vermiculture, or worms to create plant fertilizer unequalled by chemicals.
Grow organic vegetables and fruits in your yard. Having an edible landscape is fun, entertaining and healthy.
Cook outside on a regular basis using a solar cooker or other means. In the summer, heat from the stove is prevented from forcing the HVAC system to work harder. Since no fuel or charcoal is used, pollutants are not sent into the air.
Use organic fertilizers for lawns and gardens. The runoff from chemicals is causing massive damage to streams, rivers and the oceans.

1. Install tighter windows or ensure your existing window panels are up to par. On a cold day, put your hand against a window edge. Is “cold seeping in”? This leak raises your bills and carbon footprint. Some tape or newer, more airtight windows (depending on your budget and tastes) can go a long way to thwarting this subtle drain on your resources.

2. Install efficient light bulbs. If money or technical skill allows, set up programmed motion-sensors connected to lighting. With this handy upgrade, forgetting to turn off the lights when leaving won’t raise your environmental impact Continue reading this entry…
